Abstract:The present essay is a preface to the book Asia-centric Theories of Communication, which includes papers that have been selected, edited, and translated by the author. In this preface, the author evaluates, from alternative Post-Modern,Post-American and Fubian(Fu-Bian is a two-character Chinese term.Fu means a return to the principles and wisdom of ancient times;Bian means change),perspectives, the emerging and developing international school of Asia-centric communication theories. The introductions and comments on the contributions include information on the background and goals of the school, the inadequacy of Euro-American-centric communication theories for human communication as a whole,an analysis of the influence of the modern new Confucianism on the school, and an attempt to identify commonalities among the various complex Asian communication theories.Furthermore, important propositions and paradigms of Asia-centric communication as proposed by leading scholars in the school are addressed. Finally, the preface briefly introduces the overall structure of the book.
