Abstract:This paper examined autoethnography as a new qualitative research method.Auto-ethnography is a form of autobiographical personal narrative that links a person to his/her culture. The personal narrative describes the writer's experience of life and explains reflectively the experiences of culture. In recent years, autoethnography has become a major instrument of studying the issues regarding the individual and culture. The paper began with a definition of autoethnography, followed by a discussion of the origins of auto-ethnography,its postmodernism impact, its four expression styles, and some debates about it.Finally, the paper identified pros and cons of autoethnography and proposed its implications for the social science research in China.
