作为当代艺术的教父，博伊斯是一位有思想的艺术家，其思想的实质是实存哲学（施泰纳的人智学），就是强调实存先于本质、个体自由和行动优先的现代存在主义哲学思潮。博伊斯的当代艺术本身就是以实存哲学为精神指导的20世纪六七十年代欧洲学生运动的组成部分。博伊斯改变了艺术观念和艺术规则，他以“社会雕塑”的观念对艺术提出了政治性要求，他承继和发扬了瓦格纳-尼采的艺术神话传统，把这个传统引向了物质研究和社会参与，从而开创了艺术-哲学和艺术-政治的新途。博伊斯通过自己具有神秘主义和图腾崇拜倾向的创作实验，响应了瓦格纳的艺术神话理想，重塑了艺术的复魅使命。

As the godfather of contemporary art,Joseph Beuys was a thoughtful artist whose philosophy was essentially existential(Steiner's anthroposophy),which is a modern existentialist philosophical trend that emphasizes the primacy of existence over essence,individual freedom,and the priority of action. Beuys' s contemporary art itself was a component of the European student movement of the 1960s and 1970s,guided by existentialist philosophy. Beuys transformed artistic concepts and norms. His concept of“social sculpture”posed a political imperative for art. He inherited and developed the Wagner-Nietzsche tradition of artistic mythology,channeling it into material research and social engagement,thus forging a new path of art and philosophy and of art and politics. Through his creative experiments,imbued with mysticism and totemism,Beuys echoed Wagner's ideal of artistic mythology and reshaped art's mission of reenchantment.
